Artist's Description

Electricity Hand / La Mano Poderosa explores the flow of creativity and electricity, through our neural pathways and the instruments we build to power our invented environment. Through our hands our ideas are manifested, from the practical to the religious. The skeletal structure of the central hand image is mirrored in opposing corners by the power line structures against the night sky and the great rocks of the ritual monument. Light, including the X-ray spectrum, scatters prisms of possible metaphors. The cut out pictures are entirely reworked and molded together with oil paint.

Animating my art are two desires: to illustrate myth- images that suggest dreams and stories from the collective stream of consciousness, and to keep an ambiguous familiarity with mortality, that mystifying and often terrifying essence of ourselves, where celebrating life and embracing the equal reality of death entwine. The mix of collage and oil paint is a way for me to assemble an idea out of disparate parts, partly expressed through its process. Collage is a process of collision and re-creation. I appreciate rough, cut edges, the feel of different papers, the build-up of oil paint strokes and ridges.
